Our brains are very talented safety machines. That is, they do very well at keeping us from harm.

Unfortunately, that means they are predisposed to recognise and pay more attention to the dangers and
negatives
in life.

After all, these are the things that can threaten our physical safety. Like an out of control car, for example. Conversely, when it comes to our emotional safety and wellbeing, things like insult or rejection will stand out most.

What that means is the negative things we experience and that people say about us tend to stick much more than the positive. Something that can easily skew our perspective to one of fear and failure.

Fortuitously the excellent news is that you can calibrate this view very simply. In fact, all you need to do is start to take more notice of your successes. You can even choose to recover them if you like.

Then when you aren’t feeling so confident, you can read over them and get some perspective on the situation.

2. Assertiveness Training

Another thing that you can do that will benefit your confidence, no end is to take an assertiveness training course.

In fact, assertiveness is a form of confidence that allows you to effectively communicate with others, while still standing your ground and being strong with your boundaries.

There are multiple benefits to being more assertive too.

The first is that you will seem more confident to others in your life, such as friends, family members, and colleagues.

Something that means they are likely to treat you as a confident person.

Additionally, learning how to be assertive can also help you to feel more secure in your own abilities to deal with challenging situations as well. Something that can stop you from panicking even when under stress.

In fact, a little doubt is normal in most cases. However, the real trick is not to let this doubt stop you from doing the things in your life that are important.

With that in mind, it can help to look at someone that you admire for some inspiration.

Study them and how they act in stressful situations and then use those tactics in your own life.

In fact, what many people find is that one they have ‘faked it’ for a bit, their brain catches up and they really don’t get a

What an interesting post. I never thought of the mind’s disposition to noticing negatives as a defence mechanism but it certainly makes sense. it’s also great that we can change that with a little work.

My coworker once reminded everyone that we are only as good as our last mistake, and it really struck a chord with me. We often dwell on the negative and forget about all the positive things we have accomplished. I also think I would really benefit from some assertiveness training!
